Various models have been developed to explain this. The Relational Stage model developed by Knapp is one of the most famous models which explains various types of relationships. Such relationships include friends, romantic couples, roommates and business partners among others.Knapps Relationship Escalation ModelAccording to Johnson et al., (p.54), there are various levels of relationship development. The first step in a relationship development is the initiation level which is known to be the shortest level of a relationship development. It can even be between 10-15 seconds. This is the point where impressions are exchanged between the involved parties. Here, usual greetings are exchanged and observing each others mannerism, and appeara nce takes place. Experimenting is the second stage in the development of a relationship. It is where individuals get to ask each other questions and decide on whether they would want their relationship to continue. The intensifying point then follows which is characterized by self-disclosure. This point sees the involved parties confess about their degree of commitment to each other. Integrating is the next level where the formation of a pair between the involved parties becomes evident. At this point, they start doing things together, and other individuals start viewing them as one. The parties then start bonding where the relationships are announced legally for example in a wedding ceremony (Johnson et al., p.54).Knapps Relationship Terminal ModelThis terminal model starts with the differentiating point (Johnson et al., p54). At this point, partners begin seeing that there is something wrong with their relationship. Avoiding stage then follows where the partners begin to phy sically withdraw from each other (Chan and Cheng, p.305). Physically staying away from each other at this point reduces the chances of discussing matters about their relationship. The final stage of termination then follows. At times it may occur naturally. The Black Man s Burden By Henry Louis Gates Jr. - 1465 Words

The Harlem Renaissance was a time for racial uprising and change. However, sexuality is rarely discussed when researching and reflecting on this time. Many of the leaders in the Harlem Renaissance identified somewhere along the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual) spectrum. â€Å"Claude McKay, Wallace Thurman, Alain Locke, Richard Bruce Nugent, Angelina Weld Grimkà ©, Alice Dunbar-Nelson and Langston Hughes, all luminaries of the New Negro literary movement, have been identified as anywhere from openly gay (Nugent) to sexually ambiguous or mysterious (Hughes). In a 1993 essay, â€Å"The Black Man’s Burden,† Henry Louis Gates Jr., The Root‘s editor-in-chief, notes that the Renaissance ‘was surely as gay as it was black.’† â€Å"At the beginning of the twentieth century, a homosexual subculture, uniquely Afro-American in substance, began to take shape in New York’s Harlem. Throughout the so- called Harlem Renaissance period, roughly 1920 to 1935, black lesbians and gay men were meeting each other [on] street corners, socializing in cabarets and rent parties, and worshiping in church on Sundays, creating a language, a social structure, and a complex network of institutions.† Richard Bruce Nugent, who was considered the â€Å"perfumed orchid of the New Negro Movement† said, â€Å"You did what you wanted to. Choose two poems from your selection of First World War Poetry Essay Example For Students

Choose two poems from your selection of First World War Poetry Essay I have chosen the two poems The Send-Off by Wilfred Owen and Dulce et Decorum est by Wilfred Owen, because I found these two poems very moving, and I could associate with them, from what I already know about the First World War. The Send-Off and Dulce et decorum est are both written by the same poet, and they both look at different aspects of the First World War. The Send-Off is about the young battalions of soldiers being sent away to their death. The title is very ominous and threatening, it makes you feel worried that you might be sent away as well. It also gives you a feeling of coldness and a feeling of not being wanted or cared for. The first sentence Down the close darkening lanes gives you a feeling of claustrophobia, a feeling of being alone. It is also reminiscent of the trenches, it is trying to give the soldiers a pre-view before they actually reach the real thing. The feeling of unwantedness continues on through the first stanza, To the siding shed, gives us the impression that the soldiers were just pushed to the side, like disregarded objects. The words grimly gay show that the men are pretending to be happy and excited on the outside, but deep down they are probably very worried and anxious a bout where they are going. Stanza two is very short, it is also very ironic. The words wreath and spray are normally associated with funerals. The men have been given these wreaths, possibly suggesting that they are going to die, in reality they were given to them as good luck presents. Wilfred Owen has given us a different view of this topic, we can see it as if they have been given their last presents, a present of peace and security. In stanza three, even though there is a suggestion of death, the atmosphere is very unceremonious. The porters think nothing of these young men leaving, they just carry on with their daily routine. and a casual tramp Stood staring hard this shows that the tramp does not care either, he does not care that they are going off to die for their country. Sorry to miss them from the upland camp. The tramp is only sorry to see them go because they fed him, and that is all he cares about. In stanza four there is a definite feeling of conspiracy against the soldiers. lamp winked to the guard, this suggests that the guards know where the soldiers are going and why they are going, whereas the soldiers do not really know where they are going to end up. All they know is that the government knows where they are going, but no one else. Stanza five is connected with stanza four. It says So secretly, like wrongs hushed-up, they went this suggests that the war leaders who were going with them know what they are doing, and they know that what they are doing with these poor men is wrong. This stanza talks about how this was not this mens home, and that is why there is no saying of good byes. No one here will ever know where those soldiers have been sent, this is why the whole trip is going to be a conspiracy. Stanza six shows that no one will ever hear of these soldiers again. They will never hear if these men died or survived, or whether the flowers that they were handed before they left were in fact for good luck or a symbol of death. Stanza seven is asking whether there will be hundreds of men returning, just like there were hundreds of men sent away. The answer to this would have to be no. Not enough men will be returning to have any celebrations of any form, too many men were just sent away to their death. In the final stanza it explains how the men who do survive and return creep back. They creep back because they are ashamed of returning because of what they did, they were not the only victims of the war, and they are ashamed because they killed also. They are also ashamed because of the men who have not returned from this terrible ordeal. When the men arrive there is no one around, no celebrations or congratulations, to still village wells. The final line is Up half known roads. This tells us that the men who are returning can not remember where they are, even though they have been there previously. They do not remember the scenes that they have returned to because they have got the scenes of tragic, sickening war in their heads, they have been mentally disturbed from this disgusting experience. The Send-Off is a poem that uses a stressed and then unstressed rhythm. It keeps this up the whole way through the poem, emphasizing the darkness and sadness of what these men are going to. Throughout the poem the rhyme is also upheld, in an A, B, A, A, B formation, this gives the poem continuation and order, just like the battalions of men, it also is quite monotonous, therefore making it sound as though these men are walking slowly, not wanting to get on the train. In the first line Wilfred Owen uses alliteration by saying Down the close darkening lanes, the two Ds emphasize the mood and atmosphere of the men going to war. In the third line Wilfred Owen uses an oxymoron, which is where he uses two contradicting words to give the reader a deeper insight to the situation. He says grimly gay telling us that these men were just pretending to be happy, and to be brave. Owen then follows on with a monosyllable As mens are, dead. Yet again this is another technique that he uses to emphasi ze a point. This time he goes straight to the point and says that the men undoubtedly will die. Glencoe World History Chapter 12 (NAMES)In the final stanza Wilfred Owen is talking about how he felt, and how us, the readers, would feel if we had to walk behind the wagon that was carrying that dead mans body. He goes into great detail about this man, this is because he can distinctly remember his face when he was drowning in the gas. Wilfred Owen, again, manages to involve the reader into the poem, he says you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in. This line also shows the unceremonious way that this man, who died for his country, was treated after his death. The way that no one cared, and no one cared because they were used to this sight, they were used to seeing men, dead. And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devils sick of sin; This sentence shows how this man that has died, did not die peacefully, he died in pain. Bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-My friend, you would not tell such high zest This is saying that if you had actually seen these sights you would not tell the lie. When Wilfred Owen says My friend he is on our level, he can associate himself with us, and this makes us feel that we can be friends with him, and listen to him like a friend. To children ardent for some desperate glory, the word glory is the complete contrast to what this day actually is, it is not exciting or good. The old Lie : Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori. This last line in the poem means It is sweet and fitting to die for your native land. The way that Wilfred Owen says The old Lie shows that he does not agree with this statement at all, he does not believe that dying for your country is the right thing to do. This poem is emphasizing Wilfred Owens anger for the waste of life that the First World War caused. Dulce et decorum est uses an iambic pentameter rhythm, this means that the poem has about ten syllables per line, making it rhythmic and very constant. The rhyme is also very constant and it uses an A, B, A, B formation, to give the poem a feeling of order, when in fact, the men are tired and instead of being tall they are slouching and small. Men marched asleep this is using alliteration. Alliteration draws attention to the statement, in this case it draws attention to the fact that the men are so tired that they are falling asleep as they march. Wilfred Owen wants to emphasize this because it shows just how exhausting this was, and that they were getting so tired, just to get to safety. floundering the ing on the end makes the word sound longer, it gives the effect that this man is not having just a quick death, he is dying painfully and slowly. And floundering like a man in fire or lime this is a simile saying that this man was acting as though he was actually drowning. He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. Wilfred Owen uses ing on the end of all these words to, once again, make them sound longer and make it sound as though this man is suffering before dying. And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, here again he uses alliteration, he does this to draw your attention to the fact that this man id pleading for Wilfred Owens help, even though he is now dead. Wilfred Owen uses senses in this poem to give us a concrete reality of war, to draw us into the story and actually picture the scenes of war in our head. In all my dreams before my helpless sight. If you could hear, at every jolt, I think that Wilfred Owen finishes off the poem very well by reciting the title, and using it in such a way that you know that this saying is wrong, and that in fact Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori is a lie. The two poems that I have written about The Send-Off and Dulce et decorum est both by Wilfred Owen show how he feels about the First World War. They both give leave the impression on you that he hated war. This is probably because he was involved in the war and felt all of the feelings and saw all of the things that he talks about in the poems. They both talk about how reluctant the soldiers are to be there or to be going there, but the reason they are going to fight is for there country. The only reason that they are going to fight for their country is because they have been led to believe that that is the correct thing to do.

Parasitic Flatworms Essays - Parasitology, Digenea, Helminthiases

Parasitic Flatworms INTRODUCTION Imagine going to the doctor for a simple check up. Sure you've had some minor problems- indigestion, lack of energy, weight loss, and a bit of gas- but that's not out of the ordinary....or is it? In most cases you would be correct...but today is your unlucky day. The doctor has just informed you that you have a tapeworm parasite. PARASITIC CHARACTERISTICS By definition, a parasite is an organism that lives either in or on another organism. Infected organisms that are carrying a parasite are called host organisms- or hosts. This parasitic relationship can vary from benign to harmful- and sometimes even fatal. There are two main types of parasites: endoparasites and exoparasites, however endoparasites will be the focus of this paper, and flatworms in particular. Endoparasites are parasites that live inside the host organism. Endoparasites that inhabit vertebrates or invertebrates live off the nutrients in the food host organisms eat as well as the tissue of the host. These parasites not only live in the cavities of hollow organs but can also live within the tissue. Endoparasites can range from microscopic in size to 25 feet or more in length. Many worms are antiparasitic. Some live in the host's digestive tract feeding off the host's blood. Others, such as trichinosis, enter the host through the digestive tract and then migrate throughout the body tissue. Most microscopic worms secrete toxins into the hosts blood stream which then circulates and often causes damage to surrounding systems and tissue. The life cycle of endoparasites is as varied as the parasites themselves. Some parasites are permanent fixtures in a host's body, while others only live within the host for a limited amount of time. For example, parasitic worms can live within a host for up to 30 years! The host not even being aware of this fact because there are little or no symptoms of the invasion. Not only are life cycles varied for parasites but the number of hosts they live in are as well. Sometimes parasites live in only one host for their entire life- known as autecious - while others change hosts- known as heteroecious. In relation to the life cycle of parasitic worms, there are also different reproductive methods. Many parasites do not reproduce within their host, or reproduce to a limited degree. They are more likely to reproduce eggs that enter another host before they develop in the final host. These parasites just use their fist host as an intermediatory step in completing their life cycle. The species schistosoma ( Refer to Figure 1 ) from the class trematoda is an example of such a parasite. These parasites go through a life cycle in which they use an invertebrate, usually a snail as an intermediatory host. ( Refer to Figure 1a ) FLATWORM CHARACTERISTICS Flatworms from the phylum Platyhelminthes, are parasites that live within the intermediatory host but usually complete their sexual maturity within a vertebrate. They are broken into three major classes: Turbellaria, the most primitive, free-living class that resides either in or on a host, they generally live in a marine environment. Trematoda which is the small parasitic flatworm ( most of which are called flukes) has disk like suckers which attach to the outside or internal organs of their host, and the class Cestoda which consist of the parasitic flatworm known as the tapeworm. ( Refer to Figure 2 ) Tapeworms have no true digestive tract, therefore they live inside the digestive tract of vertebrates and some invertebrates, absorbing food through their body wall. They latch onto the walls of their host's digestive tract with suckers and hooks, located at their head, which is called a scolex. The phylum platyhelminthes are one of interest when discussing parasitic flatworms that in fect vertebrates and invertebrates. INFECTION Humans and animals are in continuous contact with microorganisms, because of this relationship there are numerous ways in which infection of flatworms can occur. Organisms that transmit parasites are known as vectors. Some vectors transmit parasites when they are eaten by the hosts. An example of this would be a flea eaten by a dog or cat. When the animal eats the flea, the immature form of the tapeworm emerges from the fleas body and later develops

The Nature and Purpose of an Organizations Vision Essay

The Nature and Purpose of an Organizations Vision Essay The Nature and Purpose of an Organizations Vision – Essay Example ï » ¿The Nature and Purpose of an Organization’s Vision 1. What is meant in Porter’s Five Forces Model by competitive pressure coming from suppliers? What are the market conditions that could create an opportunity in this area? What will make this an opportunity? Competitive press pressure from suppliers is known as â€Å"supplier power† and generally speaks to the fact that industry or businesses require inputs of raw materials such as labor, parts, or other supplies. Accordingly, there are relationships between companies that offer goods and services and the suppliers of raw materials. Supplier power occurs when suppliers are able to exert pressure on markets to increase costs to manufacturers. The market conditions contributing to such power include; times when there is a threat of forward integration by suppliers (when the supplier can acquire the distributor or compete directly), times when suppliers are concentrated into just a few firms (like the pharmaceutical industry), if conditions exist where there is a high cost to switch suppliers (say, if Apple stopped making Mac computers), or there is a powerful customer base (like boycotts). The opportunity in this market (if you are a supplier) is to raise prices to capture some of t he industry profits from wholesalers, or increase R&D to forward integrate into a direct competition with wholesalers. 2.Describe the nature and purpose of an organization’s vision? What impact should a vision have on the remaining parts of the strategic process? Organizational vision is the primary driver for the firm’s existence. In the form of a mission statement or vision statement, the company sets forth its values, the things the company wants to achieve, and the things management sees as future opportunities for the organization. The vision is vital to the strategic process as it frames the company’s strategic objectives and provides measurable goals and metrics. These will involve things like guiding the company’s position within its competitive market by establishing metrics such as the organization’s reputation (customer service), its penetration (market share), or its product and service bundle (quality). 3.What is meant by a balanced scorecard? How would you use such a scorecard to address both short and long-term outcomes? A balanced scorecard is when management has set the financial performance goals and the strategic performance goals in conjunction with each other. Financial performance is measured internally, e.g., ratios, profits, and operating costs, and strategic performance goals are measured externally, e.g., market share, competitive strength, and market penetration. These goals are set within time parameters to provide benchmarks in both the short- and long-term. The balanced scorecard is used to address outcomes by looking at both financial and strategic metrics in combination. Focusing solely on financial performance causes the company to become insular and it is likely to miss opportunity. Focusing solely on strategic position can create disaster if the company is losing money and management does not take steps to correct the conditions. When both of these elements are being utilized, the company has maximum opportunity for success. 4.How would you define what constitutes effectiveness of an existing strategy? What tools or processes would you use to evaluate such effectiveness? How would you use them? Simply stated, the definition of an effective strategy is one that works, i.e., one that accomplishes the vision of management. The determination of what â€Å"works† is the reason that companies develop evaluation tools so that management can understand where it is in terms of both market performance and industry benchmarks. The process flow for good evaluation involves five steps: 1. Establish exactly what key indicators are going to be measured. 2. Establish the desired values for these indicators. 3. Measure the indicators defined. 4. Compare the measured indicators with the desired values set forth. 5. Change internal processes or external focus to bring the company in line with the desired values. These are used by applying the process to any specific aspect of the vision. For example, if the vision is to be the cost leader in a market, the key indicators may be the competitor’s pricing, and the desired value for the company would be set at a point where it is lower than the competitor’s but still profitable. Management would then measure the indicators to see if the pricing was set correctly. If, for example, management found that its price was profitable but exactly the same as the competition, it would adjust its pricing points lower to increase volume and profits. 5.Under what conditions would a Broad-Differentiated strategy be most appropriate? How would the organization have to operate to execute this strategy? This strategy, which seeks to provide a very unique product to all segments of the market, is appropriate when the company has the opportunity to convince customers that its uniqueness is a superior quality, and that the price is justified. The conditions for propriety of executing this strategy include; having access to new information with an emphasis on R&D, a strong creative pool for product design, a strong sales and marketing department that can effectively demonstrate the strengths of the product, as well as a good corporate reputation for quality (and innovation).

Socialization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Socialization - Essay Example The U.S. has, in the space of five years, become a nation that ignores the very precepts of its founding and international law as well. Young persons that do not fully understand what freedoms they are losing and what this country originally stood for will believe that this type of activity by the government is considered acceptable. That is a frightening prospect as their generation will be more willing to continue the present trend of giving away freedoms for the sake of security until they no longer enjoy the freedoms that their forefathers intended for them and their fathers and grandfathers fought and gave their lives for. In addition, young persons in the U.S. will never have the pride in their country as did their fore-bearers because the country has lost its respect throughout the world and rightfully so. President George Bush characterized the ‘War on Terrorism’ as a prolonged battle against those that would employ terrorist actions along with the nations that enabled them. In addition, the U.S. Congress gave formal authorization to the president on September 18, 2001 to â€Å"use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons† (U.S. Code Collection, 2002). The ultimate culmination of the rhetoric and selective legal reasoning regarding the ‘War on Terror’ was Bush’s order of the U.S. military to invade both Iraq and Afghanistan, an illegal act on many fronts. According to the United States Constitution Article One, Section Eight, only Congress has the exclusive authority to declare war. Presidents do not have this authority (U.S. Constitution). However,

Comparing Silkos Yellow Woman and Chopins Story of an Hour :: comparison compare contrast essays

Comparing Silko's Yellow Woman and Chopin's Story of an Hour In the stories "Yellow Woman" and "Story of an Hour", both women were under the subjection of men. They were depicted as weak, loving the men of domination, but wanting to escape the men's shadows. In Silko's "Yellow Woman", the confusing western-type setting of dry, hot alkali-white crust dirt, rivers, and horses with the contrast of modern day mentioning of trucks, schools, and jello set the tone. The narrator's desire to seek solace in her grandpa who was dead(191). But the next best thing was to seek comfort in his story that he liked to tell. Instead, the narrator placed herself in the story which she told to her family(193). The protagonist ,which is the narrator, was depicted as a weak, but sex driven woman. She was handled roughly by Silva due to his pinning her down (191) and threats of "you will do what I want"(190). She wanted to get away but chose not to leave. Silva was a man that spoke dictatingly and to the point. The protagonist in the story took pride in her lover Silva. She enjoyed his sexual encounters as well as his physical attributes. She also enjoyed the adventures of riding off with him to places where he went, but not knowing him for he was a stranger. The narrator was torn between the present ( husband Al, baby, grandma and mother) and the past (grandpa, story about ka'tsina spirit). The protagonist seemed to to enjoy being dictated what to do by Silva. The narrator and Silva seemed to be free spirits. They both loved adventure. But Silva was entitled to the right whereas Yellow Woman was no more than a weak follower with no say in the matter. The narrator and Yellow Woman felt that they had to be submissive to their men. The narrator's Indian background, Pueblo, seemed to be strict with the women expressing how they really feel to their husband. Also, the men seem to be honest since the narrator sopke "the men don't do things like that"(190). The narrator deserve to escape but she just took a walk along the river but she would eventually "come home"(191). It was strikingly interesting to see Al playing with the baby with no clue as to how the narrator was feeling. On the other hand, Chopin's The Story of an

The earliest establishments, ostentatiously designed in an attempt to attract attention, were strategically placed alongside highway off-ramps in order to draw in customers. Simplistic logos, such as the legendary golden arches, began to bring recognition to the fast food chains. The fast food industry’s ability to sell convenience and taste then allowed the popularity of fast food to gain momentum. Eric Schlosser, the author of Fast Food Nation, explores the various tactics used by the industry in order to achieve global recognition, target children, and why it is more productive to reach children than to target other age groups. One method used to achieve global recognition was to apply the concept of synergy. Synergy can be defined as the cooperation between two or more organizations to produce results greater than the sum of their separate effects. In simplistic terms, two or more companies combine forces in order to benefit themselves more than they could have done individually. Two companies who have effectively utilized this concept are the Walt Disney company and the McDonald corporation. They were able to propose marketing deals, provide giveaways, and swap executives amongst their companies. The cross promotion strengthened ties between Hollywood and the fast food industry, allowing the McDonald corporation to gain global recognition. Studies show that children have an easier time identifying characters such as Ronald McDonald than major political figures such as the president of the United States. Half of Australian nine and ten year olds thought that Ronald McDonald was an authority on what they should eat. In Beijing, all of the primary school children recognized Ronald McDonald, saying that he ‘understood their hearts’. Germany has more than one thousand McDonalds, many popping up inside of Wal-Marts, because they know lots of children get lugged to Wal-Mart every day. (Schlosser 231). The McDonald corporation had accomplished its goals to reach ‘global realization’, and this achievement paved the way to pursue early targeting. Children became the target group within advertisement, â€Å"the decade of the child consumer† (Schlosser 43). In order to exploit children effectively, focus groups were created solely for the purpose of finding effecting means of targeting ads towards children and collecting demographic information. â€Å"89% requested personal information from kids† through the internet and most children supplied it without parental consent (Schlosser 45). Soon, products such as Coca- Cola and Dr. Pepper were marketed to schools and fast food advertisements were littered throughout the education system. Advertisements were placed on school buses, in school newspapers, written on stadium banners, and announcements were made over the stadium’s public-address system during games (Schlosser 51). Children were not only faced with these ads during their time period at school, but at home too. The media played a huge role in promoting fast food. Television commercials, the internet, and the radio were employed to â€Å"get kids to nag their parents and nag them well† (Schlosser 43). The adults set out to prey on children’s immaturity and to â€Å"exploit their present- mindedness† (Schlosser 46). Unsurprisingly, fast food companies became recognizable household trademarks. Ronald McDonald, Mickey Mouse, and McDonald’s renowned golden arches are a few of the most identifiable symbols today. Companies believed that by propagandizing children at an early age, they would influence the children to remain loyal customers to their company. This leads to ask why marketing to children is the most worthwhile tactic. Foremost, children are impressionable. According to Consumer Reports magazine, young children have difficulty distinguishing between advertising and reality in ads, and ads can distort their view of the world. â€Å"Children are still establishing their tastes and habits†, making them ideal customers because they have many years of purchasing ahead of them (Schlosser 54). â€Å"America’s fast food culture has become indistinguishable from the popular culture of its children† (Schlosser 48). The coalition of the fast food and entertainment industry allowed fast food companies to market toys based on current trends in entertainment. â€Å"The key to attracting kids is toys, toys, toys† (Schlosser 47). In return, the entertainment industry promoted their current trend. Children’s identities should not be defined by their consumer habits. Yet, that is the main way their are portrayed in the media– as consumers. Children were also described as â€Å"surrogate salesmen† (Schlosser 43). Schlosser explains that children need to persuade others in order to get what they want which again, gets kids to â€Å"nag their parents and nag them well† (Schlosser 43). As an incentive to get children to want to eat at their restaurants, the McDonald corporation created playlands in their establishments based off of Disney’s theme park, Disneyworld. â€Å"Playlands bring in children, who bring in parents, who bring in money† (Schlosser 47). Since children need to be accompanied in order for them to get what they want, more customers, such as parents and siblings of the child, are brought into the company as well, thereby benefiting the company. Schlosser argues that the fast food industry’s marketing tactics aim to achieve global recognition, victimize children, and explains the importance behind targeting children. He portrays children as naive individuals who are drawn into fast food through the fast food industry’s strategic efforts, and in most cases, they are. Children are bribed with playplaces, toys, cartoons, movies, and videos, and are reached through contests, sweepstakes, games, clubs, and the media. Schlosser questions the ethic and moral values of the advertisers in the fast food industry for feeding off of the children’s naivety. However, children, susceptible to the world of advertisement around them, continuously fall prey to the marketing industry.

The Uncertainty of Truth The Importance of Fake and Fact - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1537 Downloads: 1 Date added: 2019/04/01 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Truth Essay Did you like this example? What is truth? The age old question that many have been asking over and over again, from the time of Aristotle, to today with Cornel West. For some, truth is found in religion. To others, truth is found in self. Some spend their lifetimes seeking genuine truth. Others do not give it a second thought. In Tim O’Brien’s, The Things They Carried, the truth is explored through a series of personal encounters, with fabrication and fact tightly intertwined. For O’Brien, truth has the traits of being experiential, perceptive, and contradictory. Personally in my own life, I find the topic of truth to be one that is extremely interesting. The truth subjective, but has the ability to hold a tremendous amount of weight. For many, it holds everything. Yet, one fact of truth can shake the entire entity of what one person can hold to be their one and only truth. Relating back to my example of religion, there are millions who base their whole life on the fact that they believe it all to be their own truth. But if one thing could break it, then in turn, their whole life is broken. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Uncertainty of Truth: The Importance of Fake and Fact" essay for you Create order The Things They Carried is a novel about a group of solders fighting in the Vietnam war and their experiences throughout it. I chose to write about this short story collection, wrote about Tim O’Brien because it is one of my favorite books, and when I was assigned to read it in high school, the heaviness of truth presented in the book flew over my head. Re-reading the novel and writing my final paper on this was a good choice. Also, my grandfatther fought in the Vietnam War, and although it is a work of fiction, I was able to relate it to him, and understand further about where he truly came from. By focusing on the truth, the novel reveals the importance of experience through telling stories. At first glance, the concepts of truth and storytelling may seem to be opposing, but that is not the case. Storytelling makes it possible for a listener to feel genuine compassion and empathy, making another person’s experience seem like his own. The feelings and emotions of a character become personal for the reader. O’Brien explains† the difference between â€Å"happening-truth† and â€Å"story-truth† (171). He explains that while happening-truth is situationally accurate, story-truth allows the reader to experience the same feelings which he had felt. He gives an example when he describes what he saw on the battle field: His jaw was in his throat, his upper lip and teeth were gone, his one eye was shut, his other eye was a star-shaped hole, his eyebrows were thin and arched like a womans, his nose was undamaged, there was a slight tear at the lobe of one ear, his clean black hair was swept upward into a cowlick at the rear of the skull, his forehead was lightly freckled, his fingernails were clean, the skin at his left cheek was peeled back in three ragged strips, his right cheek was smooth and hairless, there was a butterfly on his chin, his neck was open to the spinal cord and the trail, a slim, dead, almost dainty young man. (124) Despite the graphic and specific description of the â€Å"dainty young man†, O’Brien later admits that he had never actually witnessed this scene. Still, although he might not have actually seen the individual faces of bodies lying in a field, by describing a â€Å"star-shaped† gouge in the dead soldier’s eye, he is able to incite the same feeling of terror that he had truly felt during his time in Vietnam, making the story-truth emotionally true as well. He paints an eerily realistic picture that allows the reader to believe the story is true in order to bring his story to life, enhancing the emotive experience. Therefore, despite understanding the fictional basis of O’Brien’s stories, people will continue reading The Things They Carried as if were is autobiographical, simply because of the overwhelming power behind story-truth. In this way, stories can possess a mystic power over the human mind. A good narrative can transport readers from where they are to a far-away land, a different time, or even an alternate reality. For example, â€Å"The Allegory of the Cave†, the philosopher Aristotle challenges his fellow thinker, Glaucon, to question what is true. He asks Glaucon to imagine a situation in which people are chained and forced to believe their entire realities consist of shadows dancing on a cave wall, cast from a fire and puppets behind them; the captives’ â€Å"happening-reality†. He then asks what would happen if a captive should dare to stray from the familiar images cast upon the wall; â€Å"And if he is compelled to look straight at the fire, will he not have pain in his eyes which will make him turn away and take refuge in the shadows which he can see?† (Plato). Aristotle implies that even when given a glimpse of reality, an individual will still return to what is co mfortable. This is also true for many who read The Things They Carried. Although O’Brien consistently reminds us that this novel is a work of fiction, we still retreat to the ease of believing that his story is truth. The power behind experience is revealed through both narratives. Like the captives chained within the cave walls who still choose to believe the images on the wall despite seeing the reality of fire, readers remain bound to believing O’Brien’s story-truth because the feelings he incites is not easily shaken. To them, their experience stands to be the truest. The slipperiness of truth is also revealed through perception. After the death of Ted Lavender, Lieutenant Cross is found curled deep within a foxhole he had dug while struggling to fight back tears. His troop listens on as he weeps throughout the night. When they see him, they see a boy who is hurting, a leader who cares so deeply for his men that he can hardly carry the heavy burden of loss. And while there is truth to the men’s perception of the situation, this is not the entirety of it. â€Å"In part, he was grieving for Ted Lavender, but mostly it was for Martha, and for himself, because she belonged to another world†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (16). Unrequited love. She would never love him the way he loved her. Cross is certainly mourning, but that sorrow is not reserved for Lavender as the others had thought. Truth to Kiowa and Bowker was that Cross had lost a soldier. Truth to Cross was that he had lost his love back home. Truth in perception can also be seen beyond the scope of The Things They Carried. In October of 1967, tensions grew high throughout the nation as news was released of the usage of chemical warfare by American troops. There was a clear division in where people stood; either for or against the Vietnam War. On that day in October of ’67, students of the University of Wisconsin began boycotting the use of napalm. Shortly after the protests began, the Madison police arrived at the scene. In the matter of moments, the boycotts broke out into riots, as police forcefully pushed students out of the commerce building. Clouds of tear gas and screams of horror filled the air. The terrified students watched as an inescapable wave of batons, helmets, and uniforms quickly approached them. Administrators, professors, and peers watched as bleeding protestors stumbled out of the crowd, collapsing to the floor in agony (Two). Even in this situation, perception is the key to truth. To the students, the war was senseless. To many others, it was necessary. To the protestors, the police were brutal beasts of destruction. To the authorities, they were keepers of peace. Perception deeply affected the scope of how each party viewed the situation and was the deciding factor on what actions should be taken. Because truth is so heavily influenced by perception and experience, truth is also contradictory. In many instances, there are multiple truths to one experience. Despite the pain that childbirth brings, it also bears the miracle of life. In death there is loss, but also relief from the hurt of this world. O’Brien leaves another perfect example; â€Å"The truths are contradictory. It can be argued, for instance, that war is grotesque. But in truth war is also beauty. For all its horror, you can’t help but gape at the awful majesty of combat† (77). In this, O’Brien explains the conflicting angles of a single instance. Through the destruction of war there still stands a sense of beauty. Both statements stand true, but it is also a matter of who’s scope you view it through. â€Å"War is nasty; war is fun. War is thrilling; war is drudgery. War makes you a man; war makes you dead† (76). According to O’Brien, the truth is messy. Truth is fabrication and concrete simultaneously. Truth is personal and yet still universal. Truth is ubiquitous. Truth is important. Truth is not easily defined. Through the muddiness of it all, one thing is for sure; the truth is certainly uncertain.
